Creative Play #1: Doctor J

Julius Erving’s layup against Kareem Abdul-Jabar in the 5th game of the 1980 NBA Finals is considered by many to be the most creative performance in basketball history. Dave Hickey’s “Heresy of Zone Defense” is an argument against a style of basketball coaching that inhibits the creativity of its players. This is the ur-text on players as creative agents. At a lecture on player creativity at the Art History of Games 2010 symposium in Atlanta, Stanford professor Henry Lowood asked, “In basketball, who is the artist? James Naismith (the designer of the game’s ruleset), or Michael Jordan?”
