The finished free-standing newspaper structure – shelter for two

This is a simple free-standing newspaper structure that is made up of simple cylindrical components made from single sheets of newspaper (i.e. not sheets that have been torn across the central fold) and held together by tape.

Requires:

  1. Newspaper – 18 Sheets
  2. Roll of tape
  3. Scissors

Structures Considered Before Construction

Rough sketches of some ideas that were considered

The following are the steps to create the components and build the structure:

I. Create the components

A. Base
Count: 2, Sheets: 1 each

  1. Fold the newspaper in half along the length
  2. Roll into a tube along the width
  3. Cut a hole through the center of the tube to allow a leg to pass through later.

B. Strut
Count: 14, Sheets: 1 each

  1. Roll tightly along the diagonal, making a very slim and stiff tube.
  2. Tape the remaining flap in place to avoid unrolling.

C. Supporting strut
Count: 2, Sheets: 1/2 each

  1. Tear a newspaper sheet in half
  2. Roll tightly along the diagonal, making a very slim and stiff tube.
  3. Tape the flap in place to avoid unrolling.

II. Assembly

Partially assembled structure

A. Leg A.
Struts Required: 4

  1. Slot the struts together to form a long tube of appropriate length.
  2. Apply tape where one tube is placed inside another to hold in place
  3. Towards the top of the leg, about halfway along the length of the topmost strut, bend the tube at a 90 angle. This forms part of the canopy of the structure
  4. Insert the bottom of Leg A into the hole of a Base component. Tape as appropriate.
  5. Take a Supporting strut and fold it into half at about a 90 angle
  6. Turn this shape so it forms an upside down V and put the two arms of the V against the base while the vertex of the V is against the leg.
  7. Tape into place.

B. Leg B.
Struts Required: 3

  1. Slot the struts together to form a long tube of appropriate length. Tape as appropriate.
  2. Tape the end of Leg A‘s canopy to the end of Leg B‘s top
  3. Insert the bottom of Leg B into the hole of the second Base component. Tape as appropriate.

C. Leg C.
Struts Required: 3

  1. Slot the struts together to form a long tube of appropriate length.
  2. Bend the top of Leg C to form another part of the canopy.
  3. Tape the end of Leg C‘s canopy to the middle of Leg A‘s canopy.

D. Support.
Struts: 2

  1. Tape a Strut between Leg C‘s canopy corner and about halfway down Leg A‘s top strut.
  2. Tape a second Strut between Leg A‘s canopy corner and onto Leg B.

E. Extra Canopy.
Struts: 2

  1. Slot the two Struts together to form a long tube. Tape as appropriate.
  2. Bend this tube at about the halfway point and paste the two ends, one onto Leg A and one onto Leg B.

F. Canopy Roof.
Loose Sheets: 2

  1. Drape the two loose sheets onto the canopy structure.
